RAMFASAT
Develop polymer AM components to replace conventional metal components in a satellite
Context:
The current idea of RAMFASAT project, is based on the redesign for AM, of acritical component of the ADC (Attitude Determination and Control) System for Micro-Satellites.
The challenge:
- Material properties in terms of strength, durability, reliability, fatigue and other characteristics must not be compromised by the use of additive manufacturing.
- In particular the FDM method chosen exhibits inferior isotropic behaviour than other AM methods, meaning that part orientation is crucial to the final end part strength.
- Material interlayer bonding is challenging itself given the specific thin geometries, but there are different methods to achieve better mechanical properties, either during printing with proper material flow and temperature control, or post process techniques to relieve material stress with thermal treating
